Autism Initiative - Pervasive Developmental Delay (PDD)

The Autism Initiative (PDD) is a medicare-rebated funding scheme that has been put in place to help fund assessment and therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Pervasive Developmental Delay (PDD).

The funding scheme provides funding for eligible children to access 4 sessions for assessment and 20 sessions for therapy with Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists or Psychologists. This funding is eligible to be used for children up to the age of 13 but can be used only once (cannot be claimed again). Children up to the age of 15 may be eligible for treatment funding only if they have a prior diagnosis of ASD or PDD.

How can I access this funding?

You will need to speak with your GP who will provide you with a referral to a Consultant Paediatrician or Consultant Psychiatrist. If the Paediatrician or Psychiatrist decides further investigation is required they may then refer you to one or more allied health professionals (psychologists, speech pathologists or occupational therapists) to assist their diagnosis. Sensational Kids offers a comprehensive assessment service for this purpose.

Once the diagnosis has been confirmed your Paediatrician or Psychiatrist will provide paperwork which you then bring with you to Sensational Kids. Alternately they can send the paperwork directly to Sensational Kids.

Can I access this funding if I'm using Private Health funding?

You are eligible to apply for this funding and you can choose which type of funding you would like to use each time you attend. You cannot use both options in the same session. Sensational Kids administration are very knowledgeable and assist our clients in optimally utilising their funding options.

What if my child is not eligible for this funding?

There are other funding options available for children who do not meet the criteria for this funding package listed here on our site. Alternatively please call to discuss your options with one of knowledgeable administration staff.
