Psychology

What is Psychology?

Psychology is a way of addressing problems by talking them through with someone who, whilst supportive, is not directly involved in the situation. Counselling psychology is practiced at Sensational Kids and focussed on emotional, social, vocational, educational, health-related, developmental and organisational concerns.

At Sensational Kids we offer a variety of sessions to help support your needs. These include:
  • Individual counselling sessions for adults and children
  • Parent support/ Parenting Skills sessions
  • Social skills dyads (2 children with a therapist)
  • Formal Psychological Assessment to assist with funding and/or diagnosis

Individual Counselling

Our experienced and supportive psychologists will listen carefully to your concerns, help you explore and express your feelings and help you find ways to manage your feelings more effectively.

Parent Support / Parenting Skills sessions

Parenting is often considered the most difficult job and the most important responsibility you will have in your life. Unfortunately, you receive very little formal training in parenting. Psychologists possess specialised knowledge on what works and what doesn't. We work with children, adults and families to develop individualised treatment plans appropriate to you or your child's needs. Parents can be taught strategies for managing children with additional needs such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)/ Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), children with learning difficulties, children adjusting to divorce or separation, children diagnosed with specific behavioural or psychological problems, low self esteem or poorly developed social skills.

Social Skills Dyads

These sessions involve two children and one therapist focussing on development of social skills, or within the family unit, development of positive relationships between siblings. Social dyads are very unstructured, allowing natural social interactions to occur for children to practice the skills they need in a supportive environment in order to foster strong relationships with their siblings or peers.

Formal Psychological Assessment

At Sensational Kids we offer formalised assessments to assist with diagnosis or funding. We are able to complete the following assessments:
  • WPPSI-III: The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence assesses the intellectual ability of children aged 2 years 6 months to 7 years 3 months. This assessment is useful to assist with funding applications and determining the appropriate level of schooling for a child. A modified version of this assessment (The Weschler Non-Verbal) is available for children who are non-verbal or have limited verbal communication.
